High ceilinged evening only music pub, mainly given over to standing though there is some limited seating. Also a table arcade machine. Intersting droplet lighting.
No real ale.

This is a Victorian corner pub and certainly called the Rainbow back in the 1880s. It is in black (pained pilasters) and leaded glass, with a brick, moulded stone and moulded cornice upper. It is a nice example of Victorian building. The interior has been stripped back to bare brick and a bit of brown - with a wood floor. It doesnt give the warmest feel. There is a main room, with an area behind the bar. The back area has a TV with daytime programmes and some seating that looks like a pommel horse! The main room has an empty fish tank (with wood in!), the space invader flat-table 80s computer game, the TARDIS entrance, a few sofas and a chest or portmanteau box was acting as the table. The was general charty music at a decent level and a few mirrors occupy the walls. The service was fine and a few people were in. Beer; no real ale, just the basic taps - I had an OK Guinness. Nothing for the real ale fan.

As I strolled up the High Street in the badlands of Dertiend a certain basic urgency drove me on in spite of misgivings about the Rainbow, one of only three un-reviewed pubs in the whole of the Digbeth/Deritend area. What foul secret might lurk within? Could it be a den of fanatical Fennians? an AlKyedia cell or a place where a look in the wrong direction could lead to senseless and sudden violence? Entering a group of old school desks topped with a steel grey computer monitor and a brace of play-station controllers appeared in front of me, to the side the Space Invader table game of my youth. Some wood hid in a glass case, a big clock ticked ominously and two standard lamps illuminated nothing. The big screen played but nobody saw as it was on a radio channel. Turning my gaze towards the counter, taking in the blank, brisk, brick walls, a coppice of keg fonts met the eye; Carling - Strongbow - John Smith's Smooth - Stella; not quite the four horsemen of the beer apocalypse but damn close. Taking my place at the counter I ordered a half of Stella. A glass of foam ensured and the kindly idiot in the woolly hat said,
"I'll have to pour away six pints, will Carling do instead?"
"Why not",
whoosh gurgle, plonk with drippiness on the bar top,
"it should be one-twenty-five", a trip to the cash register follows,
"is it?"
"Meh"
"here's one-twenty-five then".

Turning to look for a seat two young gentlemen in Victorian clothes met my eyes, complete with spats and Bowler hats. Only the lager they drunk and the glasses they held broke the illusion. A seat against the wall to study the surroundings, bent metal tube in fore-shortened S shape with plywood seat and back; another vision of a best forgotten past. Looming over me a heavy framed old mirror, it's brother across the way beside a behind the counter cave where a troglodyte customer shuffled uneasily in the semi-darkness. Above the bar-back a wind up phonograph remained silent while on a tractor seat stool a waif-like girl clutched a sleeveless black vinyl twelve inch single as the Victorians chatted to her. To the rear the call of nature was answered in unisex symmetry and although the lock was broken the smell remained untainted. As I left the front door was seen to be Doctor Who's T.A.R.D.I.S and it all became clear.
