Opposite Haymarket bus station. L-shaped interior with a poor use of space - few seats and most of the floor area by the bar is empty space. Would have been multi-roomed years ago and following the joist is an old - if not particularly attractive - coloured and embossed wallpaper strip. There is also some etched glass to the left in nicely carved dark wood insets. A big screen above the bar showing cricket whilst my ears were assaulted by dreadful chart music blarting out in conjunction. Seven pumps with six ales on, almost all local. My Jarrow Red Ellen was OK but lacked condition (one of a number that day). It all felt a bit perfunctory in here and I wouldn't be doing it next time.

After reading Rob's updated review below, we decided to give the Hotspur a go and were not disappointed. The bar staff were friendly and service was quick in spite of the banter with the locals parked up at the bar. There were 7 handpumps on the bar, so we went for the Wylam Red Kite and the Reviers IPA, which were top notch. The highlight of the show was also my pint of Anarchy Citra Star, a fine contender for Beer of the Week.

Much improved since my last visit. It's been smartened up as has the clientele. Lots of mirrors and stained glass in evidence. There are now 8 handpumps with 2 devoted to real cider. Still a couple of safe national beers on but the other 4 were all interesting. My pint of Anarchy Citra Star was my Beer Of The Week and Ms CAMRA loved the beer as well. Friendly barstaff added to the positives. We'll happily call in here again now. Goes up several points from my last rating.

I don't really like this place but I can't put my finger on why that is exactly. They have a several real ales on the bar however they're all usually safe, tried and tested nationals. The beer has always been kept OK but never really great. It's a bit scruffy and gets it's fair share of the lowlifes. like any pub near a bus station. I think it's a combination of things, but I would never go out of my way to have a beer here. Still call in for one occasionally when passing though. Just to see if my opinion has changed. It hasn't this time.
