Cosy old pub in the centre of Knutsford.

The ale selection was a little lacking - Thwaites Wainwright & Ruddles Best, but my Old Rosie was the only sighting of a real cider all day in Cheshire and was much welcomed.

The bar is in front as you enter. We sat alone in the small room to the left as you enter. I am a sucker for a cosy pub and despite the average beer selection, I quite enjoyed my visit here before moving onto much more modern and noisier places.

I did like this pub. Multi roomed and as noted it is surpringly big. Good old low beams for a spot of head cracking.

This is clearly an old building, built in the local style with very low ceilings. It looks tiny but it is deceptively large inside, the main bar area is flanked by two side rooms and there is a substantially larger split-level room to the rear, I presume this is an add on. The main bar was warm and cosy on a damp rimy day, a real fire on the go and a group of locals debating the day's news. This room has a low beamed ceiling, lots of horsebrasses and other bric-a brac such as pots, jugs, a hunting horn and a yard of ale glass. Two side rooms off here, to the left, a room with a dartboard, a couple of gaming machines, a TV and a coal effect fire, banquette seating but note the corner shelves above the seats which must predate the layout and be a spot to place your glass while chucking a dart or two. The other side room is more sedate and snug like, just a few tables and chairs and another fireplace.
The rear area is much larger, there's a big TV in here where I'd guess the locals would gather to watch sport, shelves of brass and copper objects along one side wall.
Carpeted throughout, this is a very comfortable and homely pub. Decor includes various framed prints and photos, pub mirrors and cigarette cards, mainly black and white walls, various events are advertised such as a weekly quiz, open mic nights etc.
Beers were Tetley Cask Bitter plus guests Blakemere Pinnacle and Old Wincle Rambler, the Rambler was superb. Loads of old pump clips behind the bar, the pub seems to have a decent policy of serving local micro brewery products. The pub is a GBG regular. I didn't spot any food or menus but I wasn't really looking to eat.
This is a great old traditional pub, somewhere for everyone to sit and drink and play here, this should be an example to the breweries and Architects who think bashing everything together into one sterile space makes for a decent environment.
