This is a large roadside pub, there is a car park at the rear but the side access is often reduced due to the area being used to sell bedding plants, Christmas trees etc depending on the season. I have never ventured in here previously, the pub did not look especially appealing from the outside, however on hearing the place is under threat of demolition and rebuilding as yet more student accommodation in the area I thought it was best to take the opportunity to visit.
I have certainly been in much worse pubs, it is clean and tidy, the fixtures and furnishings are comfortable, mostly upholstered banquettes in the bay windows with standard chairs, a settle, one high table admittedly, a clean if busily patterned carpet, wooden yellow painted bar front, light coloured decor. A side room contains two pool tables and two dart boards, quizzes, music nights and karaoke are advertised. There is a TV, it was playing some music station a bit too loudly. There is definitely a community pub here however, it should be preserved.
A large rear garden contains a set of swings and picnic benches, there is a quieter garden to the side.
Food is served, it is basic and cheap and if you like chips and peas you will be away. Various options, chicken, sausages, cod, burgers, all accompanied. Some mash options but you're only looking at £4.50-£5 with kid's portions at £3.
Three handpumps, one in use, serving a beer unheard of by me, Tetley's Gold Cask (£1.65 a half), no idea which brewery this no comes from now. It was ok, nothing more perhaps a bit tired, there were a reasonable trickle of customers but all were on the lager.
I hope the pub can survive, it clearly looks viable and looked after if not exactly a destination pub. Good luck The Welly.

There are three handpumps on the bar – two clipped with Bombardier (£3.20 a pint), with the third unused. There was no sign of food, or menus, at 4.00 PM on Saturday afternoon. There were only half a dozen or so punters in watching the Chelsea v Everton game on the relatively small TV screen suspended from the ceiling. Watching this match was a bit odd – I came in with the half-time analysis in German, plus the surreal experience of adverts in German blasting out at half-time; followed by the second half-commentary in English. I’m not sure how that works.
The pub itself is a pretty standard main road affair, although it does have a garden containing some picnic benches. The bar counter is in the middle of the room, in a standard horseshoe shape. The pub is carpeted throughout, and furnishings are mainly normal tables, chairs, settles and upholstered benches, although there are a couple of tall tables/stools at the back. The room opens up to right and the back of the bar counter with more seating, which in turn leads to what might be regarded as a fairly large “sports room” at the back, containing two pool tables and a dartboard. There were a handful of old black and white of Kingston-upon-Thames of old on the walls, but otherwise there’s no decor of note. The usual fruit and games machines are present as well.
In essence this is an ordinary pub with nothing particularly good or bad about it. It’s not worth going out of your way to find, but OK for a pint if you’re walking along Kingston Rd on a cold December day.
