Steve C left this review about The Farmhouse

As the name would suggest, the Farmhouse is a country style pub and it is located on the edge of Horley Town. The pub is set back from an unlit lane by a large grass covered beer garden that is full of picnic tables and a smoking area. Across the path that leads to the pub are more picnic tables and a toddler’s play area with slide etc. Food plays a large part at this pub so it was not surprising to find a car park at the rear.

The bar area found in the right hand side of the pub is bookended by an inglenook to the left and a small seating area to the right. This seating area, that houses a plasma screen that was showing football and a dartboard, had been commandeered by some locals during my recent Saturday evening visit. I found the gentleman working the jump to be polite and my pint of Fullers’ London pride was well served. Skinner’s Betty Stogs, Courage Best and Adnams Brewery’s Ghost Ship were also available alongside a standard draught lager range.

The left hand side of the pub houses a cosy seating area that is accessed through an open door from the bar area. On each table was a food menu that advertises pub mains that are priced around the £10 mark. I didn’t try the food so I cannot comment on the quality.

The interior of this pub was a lot smaller than the exterior suggested and I can imagine it being manic in here on a hot summer’s afternoon. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I certainly wouldn’t hesitate if I had the chance to take the family along for some early lunch.

This pleasant country pub is a little out of the way, slightly out of town on a road that doesn't lead to many places. It has a very large and dog-friendly garden, with plenty of picnic tables to the front, and to the side a children's play area and quite a lot of open space beyond where more boisterous games could be played. It was a relaxing place to be on a warm afternoon. I thought its customers' choice of dogs particularly ugly, but perhaps that just reflects my prejudices.

Service was good, and from the four hand pumps after a generous unrequested taster I twice chose Betty Stoggs over Pride, Courage Best or Old Speckled Hen.

I liked this pub and would make a detour to come here again.

Above review was 22nd August 2011. A recent visit found it a warm and friendly place to come on a winter evening also. Same beers except the guest was Adnams Broadside (at £3.20). A look at the menu showed a decent range, with burgers from £7 and other mains from £8.50.

It also boasts one of the best and most eco-friendly smoking shelters in the front garden, and has the remains of a Routemaster bus in the car park at the back.

Previously a nice country pub, the Farmhouse has now been surrounded by modern development and is on the fringe of a housing estate. Its juxtaposition to this housing and a rather shabby sign outside belie the decent pub it is, though. You also notice on getting close that the pub has a well tended, dog-friendly garden. On entering I experienced a calm, friendly atmosphere. The interior decor is mostly contrived beam/brick fakery, but the welcome is genuine and the staff are friendly, helpful and honest. There is a good food menu at reasonable prices. There is a try-before-you-buy approach to the beers. I understand it's a freehouse; there were 4 ales on I had a pint of Speckled Hen which was fine and one of Adnams Explorer which was well kept and served at the right temperature, but not to my taste. I would be quite happy to come back and spend an evening here or include in a crawl.
