As Malden man noted below, this pub is ideally situated for walkers and cyclists amongst heavily wooded hills. The pub itself is fairly modern, having been rebuilt in brick following a fire in the 1930s.
We visited early on a warmish Saturday lunchtime in March, and managed to bag one of the beastly posing tables in the front bar.We ordered food and drink, but were then rather astonished to note that they ceased taking food orders from "walk-ins" by one fifteen,on the grounds that the restaurant was fully booked, and that they didn't wish to run out. Much trade was lost by this policy.Walkers beware!
Our burgers were tasty, and competitively priced for Surrey. The three working hand pumps dispensed Dormouse, Falls Gold and Hop Troll, all from the nearby Tillingbourne Brewery. Dormouse (funding a Dormouse recovery project)was a dark amber and malty bitter with a curious metallic back taste.Hop Troll was much better-£4.20 per pint, but no hop monster.Standard fizzy beers were available, together with the currently ubiquitous gin.
A bit on the clinical side, then, and my ongoing search for a proper pub in the Surrey Hills goes on.

Remotely situated deep into the Surrey Hills, this pub is named after a one time Archbishop of Canterbury who lived locally and was named in the Magna Carta, a copy of which is displayed in the pub's entrance corridor. There are two small rooms at the front where the bar is located with a larger and seemingly newer room to the rear which looked to be geared up for dining. There are good tree lined hillside views from in here.
Floors are boarded throughout, mostly regular seating although there are two high tables sadly, a couple of brick fireplaces with logs plus a wood burning stove which frankly could have done with being lit on a chilly afternoon. Decor included framed fishing flies, shotgun cartridges (this is rural Surrey), a moody atmospheric picture of nearby Leith Hill plus some random other stuff.
There were three handpumps, all serving local Tillingbourne beers, AONB, Hop Troll plus Landlady, the clip looked just like this pub's landlady, I'm certain it is modelled on her.
They do food but stop at three in the afternoons so no signs later on.
A lovely spot, you can sit outside which must be nice when the weather is kind, the pub is ok but to me could be so much more. It felt a bit clinical, as if taking advantage of it's position, A short drive or easy walk into Abinger Common will take you to The Abinger Hatch which to me is a superior if more food centric pub. NB the pub is closed all day on Mondays.

Visited today after some physical activity in the nearby countryside. The pub is in a great spot in the middle of the beautiful woods and near a large pond. The pub itself could however be a lot better. The food and drinks are especially expensive and the wait for food also takes a while. Given the wait you'd expect a very good meal but there was clearly quite a few errors in the food and it was not exactly clean. The outside of the pub currently looks very scruffy with scaffholding around and the carpark nearby means there is quite a lot of cars coming and going which may be slightly unwelcoming if sitting outside. Still, it's downsides are never going to be too much of a problem as it's a fair walk to the next pub from here.
