This has retained its character as a good drinking pub, although it seems to do good food trade as well. It now has two banks of four hand pumps, one at each end of the bar, with a changeable variety of ales. On our visit yesterday, six of them were populated with Adnams Broadside, Ringwood Best, Old Thumper (an enjoyable pint), and three others I can’t recall, with a blackboard behind the bar announcing beers coming soon.

The layout is as Malden Man describes, and I liked the fairly natural feel of it, unlike many over-decorated pubs. My impression is that there was a decent crop of locals in there (with several nice dogs in tow), and I noticed it has recently started a 'Hatch to Home' food ordering service. It was a tad cold on a November afternoon, however, and we sat near the fireplace for warmth, which being at the far end of the long room to the left doesn’t exactly heat the place evenly.

I thought this was a decent place and I’d be very happy to come here again.

Reputed to have been built in the 17th century, the Hatch is set in an idyllic location opposite the large village green which contains the village church and also a set of stocks. The pub itself has extensive gardens with picnic benches, and is a popular spot on a sunny afternoon. The pub itself has three main areas, the side room nearest the gardens has the bar; this area is stone flagged and has low beamed ceilings and a fireplace on the end wall. Moving through and up a step, there is another lounge type area with a newer looking wooden floor, then on to the end room which is set as a formal dining area with a stags head mounted over the fireplace.
The pub has been recently refurbished without losing too much of its original character, although a few sofas have been slipped in and there is still a slight smell of new wood around.
Four handpumps on the bar, Hogs Back TEA, Ringwood Fortyniner, Pride and Sambrooks Wandle on at the time.
Food is important here as it tends to be in these places but I wouldn't say it has followed the gastro route, the main bar is certainly still geared up for drinkers. It isn't cheap though, the Easter Sunday hog roast was a clean tenner for a hot pork bap with coleslaw and apple sauce.
The pub provides a few rooms for B&B.
