More of a restaurant than a pub these days, the Plough specialises in steaks. It's a fairly upper class establishment. Arriving from the car park, we were welcomed by some smartly dressed young staff. I sensed that instead of being asked what we would like to drink, we were about to be asked if we'd reserved a table or at least if we would be dining with them. So, I pre-empted any possible questions with one of my own - we're just here for a drink if that is ok?!

The solitary real ale is Side Pocket For A Toad. Off to the left of the bar is an open kitchen along with a fridge containing various large slabs of steak, along with a couple of rooms for dining. To the right is a more traditional feeling snug. Although the furniture appears to have been mostly stripped out just leaving what looks like it is being used as a waiting area for dining tables.

There is also a pleasant outdoor area to the front, that overlooks the car park. A couple of old boys were drinking pints outside, with a few more punters who looked more like diners. Our visit was early on a Saturday evening, but we did observe one young couple arrive for steak with a pampered pooch that was being carried in, rather than walked.

As steak prices go, they looked quite reasonable. If you did fancy a steak, this may not be a bad place to come, especially since you can have a real ale to accompany it. However, as a pub, it doesn't really pass muster any more.

A nice old redbrick building but the interior is now thoroughly modernised as an upmarket, posh gastro pub, in gentle shades of cream and beige. Still room for drinkers though and a very warm welcome, with 3 changing ales on offer and well-kept. The front room I mentioned 8 years ago is still there, albeit modernised beyond recognition.

When you see the signage proclaim "pub and kitchen" in these parts you tend to expect some form of gastro type place. To some extent this place is just that, a large proportion of the floor space being given over as a formal restaurant, complete with the maitre d' on hand to seat customers. There is however seating for drinkers both opposite the bar and in the "Stewards Room" to the left. An upmarket feel, background music playing, round tables with "Pommerol" written on an inlay piece. Narrow covered benches in the side bar, very warm despite the fire not being lit. Some wood panelling, part purple walls, TVin the corner (off) and a couple of dog bowls on the floor.
Decent enough beer, the Hogs Back Brooklands Gold Star was first rate, also Pride, Courage Best and Old Speckled Hen. A choice of mug or straight glass offered.
