One of 2 pubs in the village of Laxfield, this one is less prominent than the Royal Oak, being hidden down a side lane. It's a traditional thatched building on the outside, with an even more impressive multi-roomed interior.

You walk immediately into a room with tall benches surrounding a table and an open fire. Off to the left is a dining area, with another small room off to the right. Continuing to the rear, there is a further small room with just one table before you reach the tap room where beers are dispensed by gravity.

Earl Soham Albert Ale is the regular beer. Also from Earl Soham was Victoria Bitter. Other guests were Green Jack Summer Dream & Humpty Dumpty Four Spot Chaser. I chose the latter, which was a very pleasant beer with a ginger taste. With people in all of the other rooms, I had the settles in the main room to myself.

I really enjoy visiting traditional country pubs like this one. Whilst there appears to be a bit of a reliance on food here, real ales are still popular and are kept in good condition. So, drinkers are still very much welcome. Well worth seeking out.

Toilets are outside at the rear, along with a garden and a covered patio area.

Early evening visit on a May Monday evening. A traditional Suffolk thatch and limewashed pub down a lane a few yards from the High Street. An Adnam’s pub,it features in CAMRA’s register of historic interiors : on entering, one finds oneself in an unspoilt public bar, with high backed settles and an impressive open fire.Black and red floor tiles. As the settles were already occupied , and were planning to eat, we sat in the dining room.As I recall, there were a number of other rooms, together with a garden.
As if the public bar wasn’t enough, my delight was heightened by the fact that there was no bar, it being a parlour pub, and that all beer was served by gravity dispense from the tap room to the rear. Alongside Fremlins, I cut my teeth on Adnam’s, and am always pleased to see their beer, especially in their home county.Arranged round the taproom were 7 from Adnam’s, including their excellent Ghost Ship, and a new seasonal session beer-Fat Spratt at 3.8%abv. This was a revelation, a blend of English and New World hops that wasn’t unimaginatively citrus dominated.
Our meals were hearty and great value, served with charm and aplomb, and the landlord was justifiably proud of his pub.

A Camra National Inventory Pub, dating from 1560. The pub consists of low ceilings and the front lounge has high back bench settles. The room on the left of here is set for dining and has lots of historical photos of the pub and the village. There are also two small rooms leading off the front lounge. Their beers can be found in the tap room, which is at the back of the pub. The ales are served directly from the casks on stillage. This area acts as the cellar and servery and has no counter. There were seven ales on offer on our stay here, six from Adnams and an ale named after the landlord named Bob's Special, which was brewerd by Cliff Quay Brewery - all the ales were top class. This is a family run pub and we found them all to be very friendly and welcoming and that includes their other members of staff. The accommodation was also fine and fairly priced.
