Friendly village pub, which is in fact one of two in the village of Steeple Bumpstead. I only had plans to visit this one.
The main part of the pub has rooms either side of a central bar. The right-hand room is currently being decorated. In fact, the decorator who could possibly have been the landlord ended up pranging his van against a bollard whilst I was there, which was very unfortunate. In fact, there's very little room to park around here - just a small area directly in front of the pub.
At the rear of the two front rooms is a further room, which appears to be used as a games room.
The regular beer is Greene King IPA, but this was off. Instead, the selection was Greene King Abbot, Shepherd Neame Master Brew & Butcombe Original. A number of pumpclips were displayed at the side of the bar. They were the beers coming next. I wouldn't have minded having the Colchester brews that were due to come on, but I settled for a soft drink and a Scotch Egg, as I was driving. The latter was very enjoyable indeed.
Music was playing from a radio station at an acceptable level, but I was the only customer. So, it did lack a little atmosphere, despite a real fire generating sufficient levels of warmth to make me feel quite at home.

Excellent village pub, first rate Sunday Lunch and plenty of it. Aspells cider. Great little scented beer garden at rear.
Fairly compact inside, and if you hit it on the day the locals are absent you should be ok.
