Steve C left this review about The Smithfield Hotel

The front bar of the Smithfield Hotel was empty with the pool table and dartboard being unused, so I decided to join the six or seven locals in the rear bar who were gossiping with the friendly governor during a recent Thursday evening visit. Some decent background music was competing with a soap of some kind on the television. The bar counter supports a couple of hand pumps that were drawing Doom Bar and Pedigree, but I decided to have a pint of Stella, which was a welcome break from Bass. This isn’t the greatest pub, but the governor and locals were all very friendly, so although I don’t plan to revisit I wish them all the best for the future.

I popped in here with a bit of time to kill before the start of the race meeting at Uttoxeter's steeplechase course. It's a substantial, brick-built street corner boozer, but it must surely have been an inn or hotel when it was built. There are two rooms, with three hand pumps on the bar but only Pedigree on at the time of my visit. There were a few obvious regulars in at the time of my lunchtime visit, but otherwise it was pretty quiet. This was during the period when things were only just starting to pick up after last year's Covid lockdown, and even the racecourse was limited in the size of the crowd they could admit, so it's not surprising it was quiet here too.

A friendly corner pub. One real ale on sale (Pedigree) at the time. A longish main bar as you enter.
