Blue Scrumpy left this review about Ye Olde Angel

I last attempted to visit the Angel on a Sunday back in January 2017 and found it closed. 7½ years later, I returned and found it open.

The Angel is located in a pretty awful down and out shopping precinct with many shuttered and closed units. Most people drinking in this area were sat on the street drinking cans and bottles, which probably explains the demise of some of the town's pubs, including the Angel.

A board outside the entrance to the Angel proclaimed it as being open. I was in luck. You descend a couple of flights of stairs to find the old pub pretty much untouched. There is a raised central drinking area with the lengthy bar along the rear wall. A few beer pumps are still in existence, but a woman soon appeared to explain that none of them were operational. The choice was between bottles and cans in the fridge, the highlight of which was Hobgoblin.

The pub is all carpeted and there are exposed brick walls. A TV was playing a radio channel, which was playing background music throughout.

The Angel's raison d'etre these days is its Sunday carvery, which means it only ever opens for 4 hours between 11:30-3:30 on a Sunday. I'd deliberately timed my visit to Cheshire on a Sunday to check it out and I'd skipped breakfast to ensure I could capitalise on the £5.99 Sunday roast - turkey, beef and gammon accompanied by vegetables.

The meat looked very dry at first glance, but was actually decent quality. Roast potatoes were cooked from frozen and veg was also cheap stuff. Although the sprouts were nice. At £5.99, I couldn't complain.

The Angel still also serves as a base for preparing pizzas during the rest of the week. They are delivered from here, but I don't believe you can eat in. The days of Oakwell Barnsley Bitter being served here are long gone, but this is still very much a pub, albeit one that's primarily in existence to sell cheap food.

The Angel is situated deep in the Victoria Shopping Centre in Crewe and not to far to the bus station. As i descended down the 22 steps to the bowels of the earth i observed a couple of handwritten notices 'No Food Today' and 'Toilets for the use of customers only' On entry i would say there was about 6 locals in who seemed to give me the evil eye as i commenced my long walk in the direction of the bar,not dissimilar to a stranger walking into a wild west saloon. It is a large one roomed affair that has seating on various levels and served an excellent inexpensive pint of Oakwell Barnsley Bitter. After i started talking about pubs the locals warmed to me and gave me some interesting info.
I think the opening times are 9am till 5pm

Town center pub, below ground level, good home made food, usually two real ales on, Barnsley bitter and Senior ale. Very competitively priced with the Wetherspoons nearby. At the time of visit this pub is not open in the evenings.
