Just as you would expect a Toby Carvery to be. Large with plenty of people eating - the food did smell good! Well organised under the new Covid regulations. I had a decent pint of Doom Bar. There are worse places to be.

Update: This is a 1930s pub, a former Ansells house, built to replace a pub opposite. It is still a Toby, were the food is always OK, and remains open plan. It has been refurbished since the last review - mainly with the eclectic ephemera being replaced by local photos and ones of food. It still has three three-area feel: restaurant, bar (with a kid's grabbing machine) and a part that does both. Service is fine. No TV or music. Clientele mixed as you would expect. 3 pumps dispensing one real ale, which was Doom Bar (dull, but kept OK). Only go for the food, really.

This place has been a Toby Carvery for a few years and is called the Turf Lodge. It was a pubco place before, with a Whacky Warehouse for the kids, popular with bikers. The exterior has that typical Toby kind of look, white and red, with a bit of timber - looks like the Walt Disney castle. It has a couple of beer patios/gardens

The interior has changed a lot since i last went in (several years). The place is open plan, with most of it given over to dining, but not all. The decor is the multi-coloured plain wall (red, green and white, with a few wallpapered ones and some wood panel. The ephemera collection of pictures adds real interest - ranging from cartoons, old saucy postcards, to historic photos and classic photos (copper covering the streakers bits!) give a bit of fun to the place. There is a bar area, with sofas, comfy leather seat and pouffes - not my cup of tea. Service was fine and the clientele mixed.

Beer; tap stuff, with no MILD, but Brew XI and Pedigree on handpull, the Brew XI was fine.

All in all, not the place you would come for a drink alone, but there is enough character in the place for me to visit and eat, as well as drink here - Toby food, from experience is fine, so will drop by

Paid our 1st visit last night (16/7/10). Comfy interior, very busy but plenty of room, no need to book. Totally impressed with the quality and choice of the food, service and prices. (4 x carveries, 3 sweets, 4 pints of beer, 4 glasses of Coke - all for £41. Unlimited amounts of vegetables on your plate - or if you prefer just go back a second time to restock, buy your first soft drink(£2.09)and the rest are free - as much as you like. Waitress who served us - Sam - very helpful and pleasant, nothing was too much trouble. Sweets were also good value - any sweet that is served with custard comes with a half pint jug filled to the brim with custard and is 'bottomless' - if you want more custard - doubt if you would mind - but if you did then the jug is refilled at no extra cost. All in all a very good value for money carvery meal. Will definately be revisiting even if it is some 25 mile away
