The Cock Inn is situated in the village of Birdwell and has the feel of a rural hostelry, both inside and out, until you hear the roar of the adjacent M1 motorway.

We also sat in the main room to the right of the entrance. The barmaid was friendly, but as with the last review 8 years ago, the ale range was not too inspiring. Tetley's Cask is the regular ale. The 2 guest beers were Bradfield Farmer's Blonde & Timothy Taylor Landlord. Real cider is no longer dispensed.

A few other elderly locals were also present in the main room, with the pub gearing up for the England football match later that evening. Nice pub, but could be better.

Although the bar in this isolated pub on the edge of the village has an impressive six hand pumps, the contents are a slightly underwhelming collection of national brands: St Austell Tribute, Tetleys Bitter, Courage Best, Youngs Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar were the beers and Old Rosie the solitary cider. Certainly to be preferred to a selection of keg smooths, but not one beer produced within 100 miles, never mind a local ale, is a bit disappointing.

I went in the main room to the right, which has stone flags around the bar but is otherwise a fairly ordinary room - another smaller room to the left of the entrance is labelled Saddle Room. There's a garden with some children's play equipment, which must bring a few families out here in summer, if they don't mind the roar from the motorway a few yards away behind some bushes. Children are also welcome inside until 9pm. Meals on the specials boards were priced between £7 and £10 but I didn't eat so can't comment on the quality and portion size. Beer was perhaps a little pricey for this part of the world at £3.10 per pint, so all in all this is not a pub I would go out of my way to visit again, unless I heard they had started selling some more enticing and local ales.
