An extended Victorian roadside inn, recently modernised and well known for its food. There is a rather scruffy car park, and it was a bit of a task to find the way in, but we managed, only to find a bunch of less-mobile elderly locals blocking the way to the bar. There is an outside seating area, but it's not terribly pretty despite the rural location. Inside, there is a single T-shaped bar and dining room, with a laminate floor and Spartan décor. The staff were very welcoming, especially the landlord, Steve, who is a larger-than-life character and notable chef. Only one ale on, Butcombe's Bitter, which was in fair condition. A decent enough local, but a bit out of the way for regular visits.

Much improved and totally refurbished this is a warm and welcoming eating establishment, sadly it no longer has the vibe of a locals drinking establishment but that is obviously not what the pub is aspiring for. Two beers Otter ale and Doom Bar on and both in good nick if not my personnal favourites. Didn't try the food as was with a group who dropped in for a drink - we were made welcome despite my first sentence!

Several years ago this country pub, known locally as the Chippies, was renowned for its excellent 'silver service' restaurant - I used to eat here two or three times a week. It then went through a really bad spell with a couple of changes of owner and finally was closed down. It re-opened this year and last evening we finally got around to paying a re-visit. The interior has been completely revamped - see photos above of the lounge areas (I didn't get photos of the dining area as I was concentrating on my food!) - and is now very smart contemporary. The welcome was very warm and the service of both bar staff and waiting staff was excellent. Two ales on offer - Otter Ale and Doom Bar, at £2.90 a pint is not bad for these parts. The pub is trying desperately hard to be a gastro-pub but although the food quality is good and is fair value for money, sadly the menu is quite pedestrian and uninspired. Nevertheless well above average and a good 7/10.
