A Hungry Horse, so I know it's going to have some of those pub annoyances I hate with a Passion – Play areas for feral children, ghastly muzak, inedible food, unpalatable beer and poor service. I was partially right, but to be fair it was better than I anticipated and may have improved considerably since the previous 2 reviews. There is a small amount of parking at the front and a larger car park with several spaces reserved for disabled badge holders at the back. Next to the carpark is the large adventure playground invariably found at these places, and a more pleasant grassed garden with plenty of bench seating. There is a large paved smoking terrace adjacent too the building. Inside, there are 2 extensive and slightly convoluted bars with dining tables, gaming machines, TV screens, the aforepredicted music, garish carpets and ornaments (or, if you prefer, ammunition) bulk-bought from, it would appear, Poundland. There is a raised seating area at one end, thought it wasn't clear what purpose this served; live music is advertised so it might be for that. There was talk if a skittle alley too, but we didn't notice whether this was still active; as there had been a bad fire in the pub in recent years, it may have been lost. The staff were young, gobby and inefficient. There were 3 ales on, GKIPA, Abbott and Brains, which were actually quite fresh, just a little over-chilled. It is actually quite a decent local, hosting events and serving its community and is better than most other Hungry Horses.

Well, visited last night and no real ales to choose from, a most delightful scene of empty plastic pint pots placed upside down on top of the hand pumps. GK IPA extra cold keg was offered, I chose Guiness which, after my experience at the Phelips Montacute at least was drinkable.
Was equally surprised at the TV screen in each dining booth. Staff also particularly inept, 30 mins for a bowll of chips to appear. Pub? no. Cask Marque? joke.

My last visit was not a good experience. Firstly, when I ordered a carafe of Pino Grigiot for my wife I was told there was no 'pumped' wine so I couldn't have a carafe. Fair enough. Then the landlady / older barmaid tried to tell me that a (500ml) carafe was the same as a (750ml) bottle and got really rude and snotty when I pointed out the difference. I had a pint of Abbot - which was not particularly good. I then had a pint of IPA - which was worse. Finally, after a long wait, the food arrived and was, to say the least, disappointing. My 10oz gammon must have had 5oz of fat and gristle and my wife's roast beef dinner had half the vegetables missing, replaced by a huge pile of mashy undercooked roast spuds. All in all a 1/10 experience and we certainly won't be back, especially since the brilliant (by comparison) Airfield Tavern is just round the corner.
