Previously a traditional town pub, now a gastro-pub. The pub is formed from two earlier rooms now knocked through to form a single room at the front and a second dining room at the rear. One fireplace has been kept, which now houses a gas fire which has a comfy sofa by it. Stripped wood floorboards give it an airy feel, and the overall atmosphere was relaxing. Parking is shared with other local businesses but it’s difficult to find a space at busy times. Two ales on, Potholer from Cheddar and Butcombe Original, both in good condition, but very expensive. There was also Mendip Shine cider from Hedges, and Guinness was on keg. It was fine for a casual beer, but they are clearly food-led and the prices would put me off staying too long.

A pleasant enough pub located a few minutes walk from the city centre, and a handy spot for anyone visiting the cathedral. The interior gave the impression of being more geared towards dining than a drinking pub, with most of the tables looking as though they were laid up for food.

I’m unable to leave a detailed review as they apparently close at 2:30pm on a Saturday, which seems odd in a major tourist destination. I suppose that just backs up the assumption that they are more food orientated. The barman was friendly enough though, and sensing my disappointment at the poor choice of cider on offer (not that they were serving it anyway), suggested the Kings Head as a suitable alternative.

Beers on tap were 6X and Butcombe. The solitary cider was Olde English.

We stopped here for a bar snack in August 09 after trying to visit Wookey Hole which was packed and an absolute mudbath. We really only needed the loo but thought we would have a quick bite anyway. Menu was a bit limited for my 9 year old daughter but we decided upon 3 Burger & Chips @ £9.95 each.Yes £9.95 EACH
It took an age to come and then the burgers were red in the middle and tasted poor. My daughter left all of hers, my wife left half of hers.In total it cost £34.95 to go to the toilet and wait ages for a totally naff meal. The thing i was also mad at was that i had already paid at the bar before the food came.Otherwise i would have refused to i'm afraid.
i was very disappointed. V POOR
