Located in a residential street ten minutes or so stroll from the town centre, this is a traditional and attractive looking stone built pub. Apparently the interior has been renovated recently, but I thought it still seemed very pleasant and traditional.

The main bar area is at the front of the pub was quite compact, with the bar counter facing you as you walked in which was clad with red painted wood panelling. Old wooden boards were on the floor and the paintwork was some sort of canary yellow, with rough wooden boards that had been painted black on the lower part of the walls. An old fireplace was off to one side with a wood burning stove, and a large pile of logs were stacked up ready for the colder weather by the back door. An upright barrel was provided for vertical drinking, which was perhaps just as well as seating options were fairly limited with just a bench seat in the window, a church pew and a couple of stools at the bar. Another room off to the left was broadly similar in décor, although there were some old flagstones on the floor, red metal chairs and an old bicycle hanging from the wall. A third room beyond this was quite rustic with whitewashed stone walls giving it the feel of an old barn. A number of farming implements were on the wall and there was a table made out of old pallets.

Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, just Camden Pale Ale and Butcombe Original on keg. The solitary cider meanwhile was Orchard Pig Reveller. Overall, I’ve rather mixed feelings about this. It was certainly a lovely old pub, but the lack of any decent beer and a rather indifferent attitude from the landlord (the only words I got out of him were a “Thanks Buddy” after I had paid) mean that I’d be unlikely to take the trouble of visiting again.
