An attractive, solid, stone built village boozer which carries on the traditional theme inside with paisley carpets and stone walls and fireplaces.
There's quite a focus on food with virtually all the tables being used for eating early in the evening, both those close to the bar and those in the designated dining area. The bar area cleared after 9 for the drinkers.
The food was standard pub chain.
Beers all came from the Marstons stable: Wainwright, Hobgoblin, Bass, Pedigree and Burton Bitter. Plenty were swilling ale and the Bass was in excellent condition and easily passed the three pint test.
Not really a destination boozer unless you're close and fancy a very good pint of Bass.

A Marston's tied house ,this village pub is built in local stone, and has a traditional interior with a working jug and bottle window by the carpark exit door.To the right of the main entrance is a small seating area, while to the left the bar has a banquette opposite under a front window.Down a few steps is a lower dining area around an exposed stone central fireplace, while around a corner there are more dining tables.Close to the bar, some metal straps hang from the ceiling and we saw one local using this strap while drinking vertically to cut a jaunty pose while chatting to his partner.
It does have the feeling of a chain pub and virtually every surface around the walls and on the beams were covered in some advertisement for meal deals, drinks deals and themed food nights. The bar staff all wear corporate sweat shirts, and food is a large draw here, with diners often spilling out onto any free table. The menu is hearty but very much pub grub from a corporate menu, this isn't gastro in any way.At the end of food service at 9pm,locals pour in and use it as a boozer and the 5 Marston's options, although predictable were at least well kept with Bass my drink of choice. It's a very stiff uphill walk from the Caldon Canal, and served it's purpose of delivering a meal and a few pints.
