An attractive, stone-built pub in the centre of Woodstock, the front bar area is fairly compact and was full to capacity on our recent Saturday evening visit, but the pub also extends some way further back and around the bar counter, although much of this is presumably intended for dining rather than drinking.

Décor wise it’s quite traditional with much exposed stone walling towards the rear and a mixture of pale blue and mustard paintwork at the front. Flooring is predominantly patterned carpet with some small quarry tiling at the back. A few old beams were on the ceiling and there were a couple of old stone fireplaces, although only the one at the front was in use which was a bit of a shame on a cold and blustery evening. Seating was mostly regular tables and chairs, although also some padded bench seating in the corners.

The menu offered a decent selection of pub grub dishes as well as a few more adventurous options, and our fish & chips and steak & mushroom pie were both decent, hearty dishes, although at around £15 each, somewhat above your usual pub prices.

Beers on tap were Eagle IPA, Bombardier, Bombardier Burning Gold, Directors and Young’s Bitter. Ciders were a slightly disappointing Strongbow and Symonds Founders Reserve. Overall, a solid enough pub and I’d happily return if in the area.

Opposite The Bear on the broad Park Street, this is a Charles Wells house which was heaving with tourists enjoying a drink and bite to eat on a drizzly September Sunday afternoon. Located up a couple of steps from the pavement, the bar faces and offered Directors, Eagle IPA, Bombardier 'Glorious English', Young's Gold and CW Globe Hopper (£2 a half for the latter). The room is roughly staple-shaped, the area in front of the bar has a mix of cosy seating with some drinking some dining and some doing both. The room tapers to the left where up a slight incline it becomes carpeted of floor and the tables more ordained for the dry trade (the unoccupied ones had 'reserved' sign on them. The interior then opens up to the right behind the bar. There's a door through to a rear courtyard patio, containing black imitation wicker-type seating and also includes a covered 'barn' at the far end which offers either smoking respite from the rain or shaded al fresco dining (although the seating and tables are communal bench-like). This is one of the more pubby incarnations in Woodstock and they seemed to have the requisite number of staff on to deal with the hordes. My Globe Hopper was in good nick too, so a generous '7' on this showing.
