I came here once before, getting on for 20 years ago and was followed around by a raven-haired vamp in a red dress, much to the chagrin of my ex-girlfriend. The Lady in Red wasn't in here the other night (she's probably now a grandmother) but from recollection, little has changed since my last visit and indeed that of Quinno just three-and-a-half years ago.
This is a Heineken Star-branded outlet, so no surprises that they've hijacked the sign as the company logo. This is a bare boarded pub, the unattractive bare brick is still there as is the 'Thomas the Tank Engine' colour scheme, though decidedly worn. Illumination comes mainly from sconce lights, which display an interior severely lacking in décor, save for the unattractive games machine to the rear. Music played at a muted level and the absence of TVs was a welcome sign.
Ales: Animal Brewery's Heron, Box Steam Brewery's Tunnel Vision and XT's 3 at £1.90 a half (in keeping with the area) and a welcome tipple.
If this were my local with nothing else around I wouldn't mind, but there's better to be had not far from here. It also gets packed with students come term time. In short, worth a visit if in the area.

Half-in, half-out student backstreet boozer. Dimly lit inside with an opened-out interior that has a false semi booth seating arrangement in the main part, with a more attractive exposed brick seating area to the right. Bizarre deep green, burgundy and dark wood varnish colour scheme and the disco-style lit bar was dreadful. Beyond is a pool room which leads to a rear patio which in turn leads to a tidy grassed area with flora and a BBQ area (not in use). Loud, student friendly alt music. Large selection of board games. Three ales on; a decent choice, two from Compass and Robinsons Trooper. My Compass Pilot 79 was merely ok, came through a sparkler and lacked a bit of condition. One poor overworked barmaid seemingly doing everything. Various drinks offers above the bar, a different one each day. Kids allowed until 6pm. With less low-grade touches this could be a nice little student boozer that the average punter might also enjoy.
