The front bar remains fairly characterful, with a food service out back. Just the one cask on a Friday mid-afternoon, a Brakspear Gravity which started-out fine but declined in quality with each finger and ended-up as a hard-to-finish NBSS 2. Of amusement value was the woke cousin of Jacob Rees-Mogg trying to book himself a comedy slot, can’t imagine his jokes go much beyond fagging and gymkhana. Worth a look-in though it’s a shame that the ale choice and quality isn’t there – would be a nice little venue if they could do two or three quality Marstons-listers as it’s set-up to be an alehouse. Feels like a wasted opportunity. 5.5

A lot of change here and for the better (mainly). Side corridor with two rooms off. First right is the small public bar which is mainly brown (in a good way!) with wood panelling, exposed brick walls and quarry tile flooring, along with whitewashed tongue and groove ceiling. Also a proper fire being lit. The rear room is a staider dining area. Two pumps with Ringwood and Brakspear Bitter, the latter of which set me back a scarcely credible £2.65 a half but was at least in decent nick (note to other Brakspear pubs – it can be done!). Worth dropping in for a swift one now. Rated 6.5

Rough-and-ready locals-only boozer. Two Brakspear ales on, mine was OK. The interior was fairly narrow, cramped and pretty unkempt. The patrons didn't seem overly happy to see me and I wasn't too displeased to exit stage left after my half was drained in double-quick time. Perhaps I hit it on a bad day but I would see no reason to go back any time soon. Rated 3

A narrow and very old pub, with a long tiled passageway down the side and rooms off. The tiny front bar is quite atmospheric, with a clutch of 2-person tables and lit candles giving a bistro effect. The larger room behind the bar seems to be exclusively restaurant now. At the back is a fair-sized courtyard area with tables, with a garden room at the end available for private hire. Two handpumps offered the mandatory Braks Gravity and Ringwood 49er.

This used to be the favoured morning haunt on Brakspear trips as it opened at 10:00 and did the Special and Bitter in top condition.
The interior hasn't really changed that much with a red and black tiled side corridor leading to the public bar first left and the saloon bar next. It finally leads to the garden where there is apparently a separate bar / function room. The old saloon bar is essentially a restaurant. The serving area is quite small and is squashed between the two bars. I parked myself in the old public bar that has been spruced up a bit but is still a small square room with a tiled floor and a low wood lined ceiling. It was quiet on my pre midday visit but the table I sat at was reserved for later. The bar has two hand pumps with Brakspear Bitter and Oxford Gold. I went for the Bitter which at £3.85 was exorbitant but in good nick. Needless to say it bears little resemblance to the Brakspear of old.
The whole place seems geared up for food today and to be honest it started heading that way about thirty years ago. I doubt if I'll be back but more because I see little reason to return to Henley.
