Quinno's below review remains an accurate reflection of this "in the sticks" country pub which straddles quality beer choice with dining. Four ales comprises TT Landlord and three locals with West Berks "Bear Beer", Loddon Hullabaloo and White Horse Colt. An extensive array of former pump clips sits above the bar including many locals.

A welcome revisit last month found four ales on the go (TT Landlord, Dark Star Hophead, XT2 , West Berks house beer ‘Bear’) which were all in good shape, around £3.50pp and eminently drinkable if somewhat samey in character (lightish hoppy bitters). Friendly barman (landlord?) and a good selection of bar snacks available, including sensibly-priced pork pies and scratchings. The pub is low-beamed and carpeted, with a food area off to the right with the left side for drinkers. The Gents is festooned with old newspaper cuttings and images of English sporting triumphs (though notably football is not included!). A selection of daily papers were available at the bar. There was also a simple but impressive bit of DIY, a wooden board with embedded bottle tops which was a talking point, as was the bear umbrella holder. ‘Bear gift packs’ which looked like the West Berks house beer bottled and sold in packs with a glass were stacked up at one end of the bar. I spent a bit of time outside soaking up the sunshine and noted an old red telephone box in the garden, along with interesting potted flora. Comfortably above average pub here and well-worth seeking out.

A pretty good pub, although as noted elsewhere you'll be drinking alongside foodies and younger children which can be off-putting at some points. The ale range of four is usually fairly interesting and served well. The modern interior has some Laurence-Llewellyn Bowen style touches, though the open gallery above the bar gave the place a bit of charming uniqueness. A TV is discretely tucked away in a corner of the pub, which shows the sport. The pub garden backs onto the local village cricket green which makes for a classic summer spectacle. Not bad at all, worth seeking out if you’re in the vicinity. Rating 7
