A roadside pub which is quite welcoming and friendly. The layout is as described by Quinno. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the locals were quite happy with our being there. Food was good value – basic pub grub, freshly cooked, though the portions were huge. Top tip – one portion of ribs, chips and pasta is easily enough for three people. As per Quinno’s experience, it was let down by its drinks. I had a pint of Old Hookey, the only ale on, which was in sub-optimal condition, while my companions’ real cider was well and truly off. I probably would come back here to eat as there isn’t much choice in the area, hopefully with better beer quality next time.

Quite a cosy and characterful L-shaped local with wonky floors, low ceiling and half wall wood panelling. Pea green and white colour scheme. Lots of old pictures on the walls to keep you occupied and the pre-War music made for a pleasant atmosphere, a nice change to the usual. There’s a bit of a jumble of items inside, think someone needs to clear out the attic. To rear is an impressive tiered beer garden with plenty of flora and fauna. Two ales; Brakspear Bitter and Thwaites. I tried the latter which had a nasty appley tang and I couldn’t finish it. A shame the beer put me off as I quite liked the place otherwise.
