UPDATE
Removed from the clutches of Greene King (although the sign and livery outside remained) and now owned by the small, family-run pubco of Oak Taverns (they of the noted Cross Keys in Thame). The below descriptions remain and the only difference appears to be a warm grey paint scheme - paint scheme merely meaning many of the original features had been painted over although old-style beer barrels converted to small stools with upholstered tops and a seven-foot live Christmas tree in the corner were nice touches (there was also a similar-sized tree in the old dining area). Loose Cannon Abingdon Bridge remained (in good form), joined by 'Oak Taverns Brew' (something from the Thame Brewery out of the aforementioned Cross Keys) and a behemoth in Thornbridge Bison (6.9% - I couldn't as I was driving). A fourth clip with XT 4 was reversed and replaced by Portobello Market Porter later on during our stay). The pub got slowly busier before we left and a quick chat with the new incumbents led us to believe they will be sticking to being a wet house, with perhaps bar snacks to be offered in the New Year such as pork pies and sharing boards.

An attractive building in one of the nicer of Oxfordshire's many villages (former PM HH Asquith lived here), this is a two-barrer with distinct areas either side of the front entrance - to the right dining, to the left, drinking (although eating is tolerated). It's a GK house, but judging on the ale selection, this doesn't appear to be a hindrance, with Hogs Back HBB, Loose Cannon Abingdon Bridge and Wold Top Keeper's Light the starting line-up, with a fourth unused handpump. It's bare floorboarded inside with new and old beams on t'ceiling and magnolia-coloured rendered walls. A couple of former entrances now no longer in use indicate either the knocking through of cottages in a former life, or further subdivision. There's a nice compact 'raised patio' beer garden out back as well as some benches out front for al fresco drinking, which are worth using if the weather's any cop and if the muzak playing is indicative of their usual selection.

A friendly, chatty but upmarket, 16th Century local, with attractive mix of furnishings, dark beams, candles and nice log fire in the main bar. A good choice of fair-priced home-made food is available.
