A back street local with a slightly run down feel to it. Eight hand pumps, serving mostly beers from the Milton brewery. Our visit was prolonged by the barman, apparently new to the pub, having difficulty getting the computerised till to work properly. Not his fault - he'd been left without adequate training or supervision - but at what turned out to be a busy time it was disappointing that someone didn't come to help him out. The beer was ok, but the landlord's evident preference for a quiet life over providing a good experience for his customers has led to a low mark from me.

Another visit to Peterborough, and this pub still serving good real ale. Family friendly pub with no music and TV. Quiet when we were there. Enjoyed Camerons White Rabbit and Milton Bombers Drop. They have a table with loads of games on, and it is family friendly.

The above was in April 2010, and we visited again this week hoping to catch some beers from their beer festival which ended on Sunday, but they only had the beers left on the bar now. There were a couple of Milton beers new to us, and we enjoyed Justinian and Nike.

I stopped off in this very pleasant back street ale house prior to a recent game at nearby London Road. Despite being quite a compact little pub, there are three relatively distinct areas within. The entrance take you into a light, open, wooden floored area around the front window, which offers a few seats and leads to a flagstone floor section opposite the bar which has banquette seating creating a U shaped booth. Beyond the bar, at the rear of the pub there are a few more standard tables and chairs, plus a TV screen and access to the beer garden. A small table near the toilets has a selection of board games available. There is a fair amount of brewerania here and there including some nice brewery posters and the whole effect is that of a smart, clean and inviting local.
Eight handpulls lined up along the short bar counter offered Milton Justinian, Sparta, Nero and Bombers Drop (brewed especially for this pub), Dark Star Festival and Chestnut and Hereford Original Bitter with the final pump dispensing Wilcox Traditional Farmhouse Cider. I really enjoyed my pint of Sparta, sat opposite the bar leafing through the large amount of CAMRA literature provided and browsing the large pump clip collection. I also spotted what appeared to be a small banknote collection on the ceiling behind the bar.
I found this pub to be very warm and welcoming with an excellent beer choice and I regret not staying here for another pint before the match instead of moving on to a different pub. One of the highlights of a very enjoyable Peterborough pub crawl, this place will be high on my list of pubs to return to next time I'm in town.
