I was a little taken aback to see as many as eight hand pumps lined up on the bar. I didn't see any cider on offer, though this is not to say that they don't still serve it. There were three nationally available beers (Titanic Plum Porter, Wainwright and Tetleys) plus five beers from three local breweries (Dark Horse, Wensleydale and Wharfedale). I went for Wharfedale Best Bitter, and this was in tremendous condition, putting paid to my fears about the possible condition of so many beers on a quiet Monday afternoon.

Best pub in Kettlewell by a country mile.

Food has to be tasted to be believed! We had a lot of excellent meals in Yorkshire and this was the best.

Beers were excellent too - about five on and we had a mixture of the Yorkshire Dales Brewing Company and Black Sheep. Excellent.

Highly recommended.

A genuine old multi-roomed hotel at the entrance to the village where the road over the bridge turns again to go up the valley. There's a large room on entering which has a stone fireplace on the end wall with a modern solid fuel stove. To the right there is the bar with not much space for drinkers around it. Further on are two rooms, the first with blue hydrangea-patterned wallpaper, the second (which is through a door knocked through into the next door cottage) featuring a red version of the same paper. Both rooms are set up for dining, though we settled quite happily with our drinks at a table in the first room. The furniture is informal verging on distressed, so we felt right at home. The second dining room is evidently used for hotel guests' breakfasts, as it was being prepared and put out of use during our late evening visit.

On the bar were two banks of four hand pumps: Doom Bar and Tetleys pump clips were turned around, but there was Westons Cider available, plus Ilkley Mary Jane and four Copper Dragon beers from nearby Skipton. In the room where we sat was a magnificent collection of cut glass bells in an open shelved display, which at least suggests that things never get too rowdy around here. Given a choice between this and the Racehorses across the road, I wouldn't hesitate: it would have to be the Blue Bell.

The above review is from 18th July 2012 and a more recent visit shows nothing much has changed (apart from the hydrangea wallpaper). We ate here after checking the menus at the other two pubs first, and found the food filling and tasty. The beer is well kept and service is friendly. Still my favourite of the three village pubs.
