This is a prominent pub on a slope above the market place. Inside it's been modernised, the original multi-room layout opened out with the use of undisguised modern beams, and none of that jiggery-pokery about them being "17th century, honest guv". There's a large stone fireplace in front of the bar, placed in correct alignment with the chimney in the end wall of the building, so it might even be 17th century. Most of the pub is set out in booths and dining tables.

Being here was a surprise for me on two counts, firstly that I've taken several photos of this pub since I started contributing to this website, but have never been in for a drink; and second that the beer quality was so good in what appears to be a food-led tourist pub. On first entering and approaching the bar to the far left I noticed among the three hand pumps Copper Dragon Black Gold. I had a half of this and as it was being poured I noticed not only the other two beers (Hetton Pale and Blonde Beauty from local Dark Horse brewery), but also two further hand pumps to the right (Tetleys and Black Sheep). When I went to take photos of these, I found also a sixth hand pump partly hidden by some gubbins on the bar counter: Craven Brewery (formerly Naylors) Summer Ale. I was impressed with the quality of the Black Gold, so went back for a Black Sheep, which was good but not as good as it can be, so next I tried Hetton Pale, which was tremendous. As I say, a surprise to me, and I consider this pub to be a bit of a find.

I stayed in Grassington for a week in August 2011 and this place was open, but the main room was closed due to extensive refurbishment. I had a bottle of Black Sheep Bitter when I popped in because the only beers they had on were a lager (Carlsberg or Carling or something) and John Smith's Smoothpour.

However, on the night before I was due home the place fully reopened. I popped my head through the door and they had four ales on, Greene King IPA, Olde Trip, Abbott and Black Sheep Bitter.

The place seemed friendly enough but because on the day I drank in there it wasn't fully open, I don't think I can really give a proper review.
