A fairly traditional old town pub, lightly facelifted and heavy on food. The long narrow bar is to the left, with a more-open room to the right and a further dining room behind. General feeling that they could have made more of it, but it is adequate for a quick pint or if eating. Black Sheep Best and TT Landlord are the regular cask ales with a guest, which was Wensleydale Semer Water on this visit.

A rambling, comfortable town centre pub , as well described by Roger above.A fleeting mid afternoon visit on an April Thursday afforded a decent glass of Wensleydale Semer Water, alongside beers from Tim Taylor and Blacksheep.Multi-roomed,fairly busy.

Roger Button left this review about Black Lion Hotel

As picturesque as the tonw of Richmond may be, the pubs are on the whole a bit disappointing but the Black Lion, tucked down a side street leading off the Market Square, was certainly one of the better options.

The pub hosts not just the usual tourist and townsfolk traffic but is also well known for its paranormal guests.. Sadly no out of the ordinary occurrences on my visit but the pub wasn’t without a certain element of charm and appeal.

The front section of the pub has been knocked through tio create an L-shaped main bar albeit it is still effectively divided into two2 distinct parts. The larger bar area has stone floors and a flat screen TV whilst the carpeted section to the right of the central doorway centres on a brick arch fireplace containing a coal burning stove. A dresser and some book shelves give it a homely feel. A sign on the back of the main seating warns that musicians have priority so if you are here for an evening, check that there is no live music or you will be shifted out of your seat. At the rear is a separate room with a brick kiln oven in the corner and a second TV but the room was shut on this occasion so I didn’t get a chance to have a good look. The first floor also contains a Bistro but, again, I didn't venture this far.

There are generally 3 ales available, Rev James, Black Sheep Best and Flowers IPA advertised for my visit although the IPA was not available. The quality was fine (they are Cask Marque accredited) and the prices were reasonable enough.

It wasn’t particularly busy during our stay but it seemed to have a sensible ambience that attracts a mixed customer base and was also dog friendly. In short, this is an enjoyable enough pub that doesn’t stretch itself too far but is a notch above some of its competitors.
