As described earlier, this is a comfortable stonebuilt former coaching inn in a solid stonebuilt Dales village, largely focusing on dining, but with two welcoming bars and a games room in the former cellars. The collection of hooks hanging from the bar ceiling hints to a past life as a stables.
Flag stone floor, impressive open fire, pictures of local worthies, and a shrine to All Creatures Great and Small,On the bar, in addition to Theakston's and Black Sheep, three house beers from the local and noted Yorkshire Dales Brewery-a Blonde, a dark 'un and a Bitter. On our late October lunchtime visit, the Blonde won the laurels.
Substantial meals, and a friendly landlady.

Local recommended the Drovers Ale and it was the pint of the night.
It was also Pie Night. And so far, winner of the best pie on the Inn Way.
Superb pub - oozing history and class. Highly recommended.

The claim to fame for the village of Askrigg is that it was used in the 70’s TV series of James Herriot 'All Creatures Great and Small'
And the Kings Arms is a former stables, which was converted into a public house in the early nineteenth century and featured as 'The Drovers Arms in the said TV series.
It has a cosy multi roomed interior but one of these is usually laid out as restaurant as it does focus on an upmarket food menu to capture the tourist trade in summer.
However usually has at least two beers on the go from the Theakstons and Black Sheep stables, and although does not have a garden there is a passageway between the pub and the building next door which allows outside drinking on barmy Yorkshire evenings. For reasons of the the steep hill which forms the main street in this village and its location to other places in Askrigg, the Kings Head is usually referred to as the ‘bottom pub’ by the locals..
