The George Inn is in the small village of Spaldwick which comprises the pub, a shop and a petrol garage that serves motorists that speed along the A14. Being in the middle of nowhere this pub is led by dry sales, but there is a bar area that was busy with a local crowd during my recent Saturday afternoon visit. This L shaped bar area is found to the right of the front entrance where an inglenook and second fireplace can be found. There is also a plasma screen that was showing muted daytime TV and there was no background music. To the left of the entrance is the main dining area which is long and thin and split up into various sections to give a cosy feel. The kitchen was closed during my visit so there were no diners present. I did have a glance at the bar menu that listed sandwiches that were available for £6 and sharing platters for £9.
The bar is stocked with standard and premium draught products and the three hand pumps were drawing Landlord, oakham’s JHB and Woodfordes Wherry.
Along the front of the pub are a few picnic tables and out the back there is a decked area with more picnic tables. Obviously there is a large car park for the visiting diners.
I’m always a little apprehensive when I see Michelin Guide stickers in a pub window, but this place retains a pub feel; even if it is a little sterile. This isn’t a pub anyone would visit just for a beer unless they lived in the village or were visiting someone who lived in the village.
