This is a large, well presented roadside pub, just a short walk from St Margaret’s station. The pub has a large main bar area in the left half of the building, which is bare boarded with the servery along the rear wall. The bar counter and bar back have been painted in a rather upmarket looking colour scheme, which sadly makes the room lose some of its inherent character. It’s clearly a rather fine old building, with stained glass windows evident to the front, each depicting a detailed image of various birds, whilst several panes of tasteful, modern etched glass can be found around the entrance. The furniture matches the room’s high spec, with comfy button backed banquettes to the front and right, well appointed high tables and stools through the centre and a lovely old fireplace to the left, surrounded by a Chesterfield and backless leather bench. There is a door to the left, just beyond the fireplace, which leads out to a sizeable patio garden with plenty of bench seating and a few shady spots. The right hand side of the pub is essentially a two-part seating area, accessed via an entrance with two doorways which retain their old ‘Private Bar’ and ‘Saloon Bar’ panes, as well as having an attractive mosaic tile floor depicting a crown image. Seating in the front section includes high stools and tub chairs, whilst the rear part is a particularly fine looking restaurant space with pre-set tables and standard chairs.
The pub has found its way into recent editions of the Good Beer Guide and had four ales available on this visit – Oakham Citra, Harvey’s Sussex Best, Surrey Hills Shere Drop and Southwark Thames Drop Pale. My pint of the latter was in pretty good shape and the service, whilst a little slow, was at least friendly enough.
This is a bit of a posh feeling pub that presumably serves quite a well to do neighbourhood. The main bar room was worth the visit to see it’s numerous fine features and the beer choice and quality was certainly nothing to complain about. As far as this sort of upmarket style pub goes, this was a pretty good visit and worth popping in if waiting for a train or passing through the area.

Dating from the 18th Century, this large bare boarded pub has several areas as well as some impressive retained Georgian features. The main bar area features an impressive vaulted ceiling complete with a pair of roof windows while the room at the back has a barrel vaulted version. There are three feature fireplaces and a fair bit of etched glass. The entrance lobby has a mosaic floor. Some of the doors looked to possibly be original.
A side room next to the entrance looked to be a formal dining room but there were randomly positioned set tables throughout the pub on Friday afternoon. The walls are embellished by a huge amount of framed material and I noted a couple of shelves of porcelain in the back room. The side and rear garden, looking onto Marble Hill House from some areas looked to be a pleasant spot.
There were four beers on, Twickenham Grandstand, Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Sharp's Cornish Coaster and Harvey's Best Bitter. Not a bad selection and my Shere Drop was in fine form. I didn't see a food menu.
This is a nice and clearly well looked after pub, spotlessly clean and surprisingly busy at around 4pm. Dog and child friendly it seems, quite a lot of yummy mummies in with babies and toddlers which I confess to finding tiresome but that's probably not just me. It was a bit too hot as well, no need for the fire on a mild day.
Other nice touches, papers available, there were little dishes of nuts and biscuits on the bar counter and the service was good, nice to see that a barmaid realised the other staff were tied up with big orders so stopped cleaning and came and serve me.

Another excellent conversion.Lovely large bright bar.Food features heavily but they have 4 real ales on.My pint of Surrey Hills was very good. They have kept the leaded windows and the acid etched glass in the doors. The outside area has had a make-over and is perfect for a sunny day.
