This non-descript-looking single-storey roadside pub/diner, an Ember Inns house, falls into the 'just-shows-how-wrong-you.can-be' category. Its dull exterior, crowded car park and signs advertising rather twee 'events' weren't the most inviting portents, but once inside we were immediately cheered up. The atmosphere was cosy and the smell of the open fire made one feel instantly at home. Six excellent ales on, all in perfect condition (we had to check all 6 to make sure). Bath Ales's Prophecy, Hobgoblin, Old Legover, Copper Dragon, Hilden's Number Four and Kelburn Dark Moor were all on, and although we were offered 'try before you buy' tasters, we forewent that in favour of the 'just have a pint of all of them' method. The staff were wonderful, the locals were friendly and the jukebox was nostalgia-inducing. This is a first class example of how good a modern chain pub can be, given a bit of energy, imagination and effort by the management. Ember Inns, this should be your flagship pub. I shall definitely return, and I strongly recommend including this pub in a crawl or just staying there for an evening's drinking.
