*UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT* As of 25/07/16. The Rose and Crown, Heston is a warm, family friendly, welcoming pub. We have made lots of positive changes since taking over the premises in July. We have redecorated the interior prior to a full refurbishment which is planned for January 2017. We have a varied selection of quality draft beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks and will be introducing three real ales over the coming months. Pop in and see what we have to offer. Johnny and Tash.

There was no real ale here, but the barmaid was apologetic in admitting that the only bitter that they had on was keg John Smith's. There was an unclipped handpump so maybe they do sometimes have it; in fact WhatPub says that their regular beer is Courage Directors. Maybe I was just unlucky. I didn't see any sign of food at Wednesday lunchtime.

The pub looks good from the outside with its attractive hanging baskets, and has a nice walled garden to the side of the pub. But inside it was somewhat unusual. The fixtures and fittings were straightforward enough - a carpet on the floor, normal tables and chairs, standard bar counter, pool table - but other things were a bit strange. OK, it's not the hottest June on record, but I don't think that on a warmish day in late June that we really need a roaring coal fire on the go, but that's what we had here. But none of the other patrons seemed to think it odd, and to be honest my wife would have been happy enough with it. Maybe it's just me who doesn't see a need to swelter inside a pub. Then there was the chap at the bar with smoke rising around his head. Obviously I am not saying that he was smoking inside, as I would have to delete my post. Perhaps it had clung to his clothing on a visit outside to have a smoke?

We had some Take That being played at background volume levels, but that obviously wasn't enough for someone, as over the top of it they put on, at ear-splitting volume, Unit 4's classic Concrete and Clay, followed by Buddy Holly's Brown Eyed Handsome Man. Nothing wrong with the choice of songs, but they were so loud it was hard to concentrate on my notes. At this point I decided to slip back through the time warp, cunningly disguised as a door, back to 2016. Maybe on another day it would be an ordinary pub. I hope the locals appreciate it as it is, because they don't have another pub in easy walking distance now that the Old George has been converted into the ghastly looking Yolo Lounge.
