This is essentially a hotel with a sizeable Indian restaurant – or perhaps an Indian restaurant that does accommodation. However, there is a small separate bar accessed by its own door around on the left hand side of the building. This is a small room, with a pool table, a couple of tall tables and tall stools, with some more tall stools at the bar, plus some dark upholstered sofas and armchairs. But unfortunately no traditional furnishings. There was a TV on behind the bar, showing an old episode of Darling Buds of May.
There’s no real ale, and although they sell Guiness, they don’t sell it in halves for some strange reason. A half of some bogstandard lager cost £1.90. There was no sign of food in the bar, which is perhaps not surprising as the bar is co-located with an Indian restaurant. This is clearly a magnificent old building, but a shame the bar is such a poky affair – but at least they have retained a small bar.

This large pub advertises itself as a bar, Indian restaurant and bed & breakfast and opens at 7am for breakfast service which ends at 10.30am. I popped in at lunchtime on a recent weekday and the large restaurant side of the pub was completely empty and there were only two other customers in the smaller public bar side. Maybe there is more custom in the evenings as curry isn’t most people’s lunchtime food of choice.
The public bar is totally separate from the restaurant and does feel like a pub as there are three flat screens which show Sky Sports and there are also two pool tables and a jukebox. There is no real ale here, but the barmaid was friendly and the Guinness that I was poured from the limited standard draught selection was up to scratch.
There is also a beer yard out the back with some covered seating, but I can think of better pubs I’d rather be in on a hot summer’s day.
Maybe the food is good, but this isn’t a pub to go out of the way to visit just for a beer.
