This is another isolated pub that’s miles from anywhere. This one does look to be food led. On the left as you enter is a small area with a fireplace and a couple of sofas; in front of the bar counter is a table that seems to reserved for dog walkers but seems to be bookable; with the majority of the seating being on the right and forming a dining room. All the tables on the right had reserved signs on them, but as the place was nearly empty on Friday afternnon we decided not to notice the reserved signs.

The décor was a bit arty, including things like prints of ballerinas, dogs, a naked woman (every pub should have one!), and Paul McCartney smoking. Other stuff included a gold disc on one of the walls, a set of antlers on another, plus I saw a pub quiz advertised for Tuesdays. There’s masses of outside seating as well as a car park.

On the surface the ale selection seemed quite good (GK IPA; GK Back of the Net; Bombardier; Hobgoblin Gold; and Thwaite’s Wainwright). But the Wainwright was in poor condition, but readily replaced by Bombardier – which although not brilliant was drinkable.

This place doesn’t seem to be the sort of place that tries to attract drinkers, as opposed to diners. I don’t think that I would be hankering for a return visit, even if I did live a lot nearer.

Characterful country pub situated on Whitewebbs Lane.
Parts of this pub apparently date from the 16th century and its name comes from the story of King James I meeting a tinker in an alehouse and the tinker not knowing who he's drinking with, and this is allegedly the pub where it happened.
Could be true as Stag hunting by the royals of the local forests does go back to Tudor times and this is a nice old periodic building with large stone fireplace and dark oak wooden beams internally. Its laid out in two distinct areas, one for drinking and one for eating.
The bar area is comfortable with a raised area to the left with seating and the only tele in the pub, a plazma flat screen which is usually only on for the sport. Then the room to the right of the bar is in the same tudor style but has several tables laid for dining.
The bar supports three handpumps, two normal ones which were dispensing Adnams Broadside and Fullers london Pride on my last visit on Sunday afternoon and then one of those stupid GK IPA Cask Revolution fonts which alledgely alows the bar staff to serve you a Northern or Southern pint. I wonder how many people they get visiting from north of the Watford Gap who demand an inch of foam on top of their pint.
One big plus of the King and Tinker is that it is a nice out the way spot for a drink, especially if you have traipsed through WhiteWebbs from Forty Hall or Hilly Fields to get here. It benefits from a good outside drinking area. There is a decent sized outside garden in front of the pub and then a separate large childrens play area with additional bench seating on the far side of the car park almost built into the forest. This means the main garden area is usually void of small kids running around and is therefore a relaxing place for a pint when the sun is out, as it was on Sunday for the only decent day of the bank Holiday Weekend.
And if you do visit whilst walking the several local forest trails, inside the curious medieval style porch on the front door is a good place to leave your muddy walking boots.
