My first visit for well over a decade, and it was good to find it less gloomy than my memory of it. And livelier too, and with five beers on the bar, two of which I can aver were in very good condition. There are 10 "craft beers" too, and a number of ciders listed on the blackboard. I went for two beers from Nethergate, a brewery I have found reliable in the past and they didn't let me down; neither did the cellar team, as both beers were in the NBSS 3.5/4 range. There was another Nethergate, plus a chocolate stout from Rudgate, and Oakham Citra. Definitely one to include when visiting Cambridge.

ORIGINAL REVIEW September 2012.
Sadly not open on a Thursday lunchtime despite being listed as such in the 2013 GBG.The exterior was looking a little tatty but peering in through the window revealed a good line up of real ales and a functional interior.

October 2020
I really wanted to check this pub out and arrived at the 5.30pm opening times to find out that only takeaways were being offered from a table blocking the side entrance. It was a wet Wednesday ,so I was thwarted again, this time by Covid.

UPDATE

At last got inside the pub to offer a proper review. After a change of hands, opening times during the week now observed as 4pm and there was a friendly welcome from behind the bar. Essentially a single room with a real fire and three sided servery to the right side,it does look like two smaller terraced buildings knocked into one.At the rear of the pub is a narrow wood panelled snug with a single long table,a good place for a team photo. The interior is all very traditional and there is a boozer atmosphere ,authentic compared with the nearby Salisbury which is focuseed at the student market.
The ale choice on my visit was Oakham Citra,Nethergate Suffolk County,Settle Plum Porter,Great Newsome Sleck Dust and Fat Cat Marmalade Cat on top form,NBSS 4.5.
I really enjoyed my crawl visit and could easily have stayed longer.Don't miss out when in Cambridge.

An absolutely first-class pub, the best I’ve found in Cambridge to date. Well described by others, below, this is a venue in its own right, though it doesn’t open in the afternoon so be aware. Ales on were Green Devil and Citra from Oakham, Elgood’s Cambridge Bitter, Yeovil Night Train and Nethergate Umbel. The other handpumps were dispensing cider and perry from Simon’s Cider. There was an advert for a rum festival, which sadly wasn’t on during my limited visit to Cambridge, plus several adverts for other pubs’ forthcoming beer festivals. Definitely worth a visit and an essential crawl pub.
