I visited the Nags Head on a Tuesday evening back in September last year when the pub was busy with a crowd who were watching an England match. This pub is long and thin with an L-shaped bar. Seating can be found under the front windows and along the right hand wall. At the rear are two small seating areas and access to a smoking area out the back. Multiple televisions show Sky Sports.
There was no real ale available during my visit as the Wychwood’s Hobgoblin was off and the two other hand pumps were unused. Standard keg was available. I found the service to be curt.

Sorry, this is not a review, just some information for pub historians. I came across an article in The Bolton Journal whilst researching a family with six sons serving in The Great War. It tells of the six Baines sons. The father was William Baines, a gardener and nurseryman in Lostock Junction, Bolton until war started. In 1915 he has moved to Eccles to become the landlord of The Fox Vaults, which I understand from the review by Alan Winfield is the previous name for The Nags Head. If anyone knows what became of William or any of his family and if there are any living relatives in the area can you please post me the details. Many Thanks

At last, some real ale. This pub looks small from the front but its actually quite big as it stretches back to reveal a pleasant lounge area. 3 real ales on at the time. Very good prices too on this Friday afternoon with a pint of real ale being £1.50. If you can, bypass the first 4 pubs from the train station and start here.
