This pub was built in 1850 and rebuilt in its attractive form in 1883, the concave corner entrance would seem to be new but the retention of two Truman's boards is of note. Up top there's a dining conservatory - where astronomy is periodically undertaken - and a herb garden inspired by the mid-17th century herbalist, physician and astronomer Nicholas Culpeper after whom this place was renamed in 2014. Culpeper lived at 92 Commercial Street in where later would be built the now closed Red Lion.
Inside, and it's a very modern affair with all-round very distressed brickwork with a little dark blue/grey paint. The bar structure is a tubular steel affair with hanging steel gantries, punctuated with a little modern white tiling. Furniture too is largely that of modern tables, tubular steel and plywood chairs with some upholstered banquette seating to the side windows, tall chairs and beer shelves along the main windows; the floor is herringbone parquet. Music played at a very sensible level, all of it lapped up by a very young crowd.
Ales: just the two, Purity's Gold and Harvey's Sussex Best at £2.40 the half which is quite pricey but was in good nick.
This isn't a bad place but I'd ideally not spend an evening here, but there aren't that many good traditional pubs in this neck of the woods but the late - or very late - licence is a bonus.

Moby Duck left this review about The Culpeper

A large rounded corner pub, inside its been given the modern distressed look with lots of exposed brick and in places some nice tiling in two shades of Brown and white, this is also echoed on some of the external walls.Mixed seating ranging from basic benches through to suitably distressed armchairs, The central bar offered four beers, Trumans Rio Gold,Harveys Best and two from Purity, UBU and Gold, the latter beer being very good, unfortunately I found the price of £2.40 a half to be rather on the steep side. There was a decent selection of bottled craft beers in the fridge. Price aside I really liked the pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Princess Alice

Wedge-shape pub, with a dark interior not really helped by the scattering of candles about the tables. Cluttered layout, with seating all over the place plus pool, table football, pinball, etc. Seems to be run by, and aimed squarely at, those who value style over substance. Two handpumps, offering Doom Bar and Pride (£3.70).
