Harking back to the mid-19th century as the Newcastle Arms and rebuilt in 1937, to be renamed the Watermans Arms in 1962, the Great Eastern in 2011 after Brunel’s SS Great Eastern, launched a few hundred yards to the west of here, the current name arriving in 2020 when it reopened as a boutique hotel. In Millwall.
The interior features a dark boarded floor, modern wood and shiny ceramic tiled bar back, trendy modern light fittings with filament bulbs, duck egg blue walls and white Anaglypta ceiling up front, then a snug room with modern banquette, munge coloured walls and low black matchboard ceiling. To the rear/right-hand side there’s some sort of ersatz Art Deco-style cocktail bar affair. Furniture is fairly modern and zoned in accordance with the colour scheme, sport played in silence to a TV and décor took the form of black and white photos of the area from yesteryear. What few customers in were older local types, then older more affluent incomers, drinking wine and possibly guests.
Cask options amounted to just an unused pump next to one with a reversed Pride clip; I wouldn’t have opted for it had it been available, so it was a half of Neck Oil at £3.50 served by a friendly barman.
A zillion miles from the Ferry House up the road, this pub doesn’t seem to know what it really is, which may explain why it was so sparsely populated at 9.45pm on a Friday; with a similar lack of cask, the Ship is a better and more authentic option, likewise the Ferry House. If you can get served…

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Great Eastern

A imposing building, located close to river as its previous name of the Watermans Arms suggests. Inside, you find a 'L'-shaped bar and the separate Brunel Lounge. Refurbished with semi-modern furniture, but retaining more-traditional decor including local history prints and photographs. Unfortunately, just two of the four handpumps were on when I visited, with Bombardier and Old Rosie cider available (with Black Sheep shown as coming soon). Overall, despite the disappointment on the beer front, this is a pleasant spot to stop for a pint.

The girl who served me my pint was efficient and friendly; I sat down to read my book over a quiet pint while a few other punters at the bar carried on their conversation. I finished my beer then left – seems fair enough to me.
Real ales on were Pride, Broadside and Young’s Bitter. I had the Pride, which was not brilliant, but OK. This is a large pub near the river, with a separate dining room on the right as you go in. Actually this is a comfortable, what I might call old style, pub. There were a few locals in, using what some might regard to be overly colourful language, standing drinking at the bar, but otherwise it was fairly quiet on a Wednesday lunchtime. The music was the usual banal pop music, but it was not being played too loudly. I wouldn’t mind dropping in for another pint if I were in the area.
