A cosy and warm feeling locals pub, well attended and traditionally furnished. Horse racing was on TV adding to the local/Irish pub feel. The two handpumps on the bar were unused and this seems to be a permanent state of affairs, the keg options were mostly the standard usual suspects plus some Beavertown Neck Oil and Five Points Pale. Despite the lack beer interest here I found myself quite liking the pub.

This is a former Truman’s pub dating back to the mid-19th century. Until fairly recently it had gone through a couple of fake Irish incarnations, being part of the Wishing Well then Tommy Flynn’s chains.
An attractive frontage gives way to an interior with a boarded floor and a fake ‘chalet’-style bar array, with leaded stained-glass infill, but what’s really striking is the exposed brickwork, which with the bar and exposed rafters, gives a slightly baronial fee; I wonder if this is an example of 1950s’ theme pub kitsch? Furniture is traditional, with some booth-style banquettes to the periphery. Horse racing was shown on a smallish TV with the sound off, so as not to compete with a decent quality soundtrack and a darts match was in progress. Décor amounts to many assorted knickknacks to high shelves, then framed black and white pictures of assorted characters, presumably the pub’s patrons. Customers were certainly above the average age found in local hostelries, most but not all being older than me, with just one solitary jolly Irishman at the bar. In all there was a friendly atmosphere, devoid of the industrial language to be found at the Cock down the road and flyers were on display for upcoming events, including karaoke three times a week.
On the ale front, the pub displays Cask Marque accreditation on its website, but there were two unused pumps – CAMRA concurs – me opting for a half of Neck Oil at an almost charitable £2.80 a half, served by a very friendly old-school landlady, who on handing me the glass, immediately withdrew it for a top-up, even though not required.
A far cry from the trustafarian, hipsterfied pubs that now dominate Hackney, this is a great traditional locals’ boozer, one of just three remaining in the entire borough. With the addition of a couple of quality ales – Hackney has no shortage of breweries – this could be a minor destination with a higher mark, but as it stands, I’d have no problem including it on a crawl.

Now called the crown but still retains some of it’s Irish vibe. No real ale.
