Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The East Hill

Attractive two-room Geronimo gastro-pub, partly opened-out to leave a bar and dining area of about equal size. Benefits from large windows on two sides as well as light furniture and decor. Compact patio terrace on the eastern side. Four real ales on handpump: Doom Bar, Wandle, Truman's Swift and LBF Chelsea Blonde (£4.20). Pleasant atmosphere with Wimbledon on the TV late on a sunny afternoon.

This is still the food led pub that has been described previously. When I entered I was greeted by the strong smell of fish, possibly because someone had shelled out £16.50 for the “pan-seared hake, shitake mushrooms, Chinese leaf, leek, ginger, soy”. The sandwiches were £7.95, including chips – I was glad that I’d already enjoyed a late ‘spoons breakfast.

They did have four ales on though – Doom Bar, Cornish Coaster, Redemption Pale Ale, and Cronx Brewery (based in Croydon) Standard Bitter. I went for the latter at the odd price of £3.79 a pint.

The interior is as already described – it’s still the same standard gastropub with its full complement of sofas, armchairs, tall butchers block tables and tall stools, although there are a couple of standard tables with standard chairs in the bar area. The original ornate ceiling is definitely the best feature in this pub in my opinion. But for a gastropub the ale selection is above average, and apparently not rididulously overpriced either.

A large old Victorian street corner pub that sadly has been visited by the "trendy" interior designers. The colour scheme is olive green with a lighter coloured green/yellow above, repeated also on the ground level external brickwork, the bar would appear to be built from kitchen units, and a series of dressers contain jars of pot eggs, pot pourri and various other non-pub related artifacts. They have thoughtfully provided a clock on an interior column of such size that the local time can probably be read by a passing satellite. It did take me a short while to find somewhere suitable to sit, not I must add because the pub was actually busy, far from it, just simply because most of the seating was either inappropriately low sofas, backless hard stools or silly high stools at hewn timber shelves. I finally spotted something resembling a normal table and chairs. Add in garlic hanging behind the bar, loudish jazz soundtack, and a snack menu including something called "Aubergine Caviar with Soldiers". The signs advise that this is a residential area and to leave quietly however there is an extensive front veranda for the yuppies to bray on.
The beer however was fine, three of four pumps in operation, Harvey's Sussex Best, Sambrook's Wandle and Doom Bar, and at least the ornate plasterwork on the ceiling has not been vandalised. A reasonable mark up for the beer quality and range but otherwise..... why do they do this to pubs?
