An old traditional pub, now very much upmarket but retaining a pubby feel with lots of old dark wood in evidence and four or five separate drinking areas. Five handpumps in all with two donning Youngs Bitter clips, Youngs special on another with Guests of Sambrooks Wandle and Wimbledon Copper Leaf taking up the remaining two, the latter being hideously priced at £4.95. Nice enough pub but one best left to any stray tourists.

This is a Young’s pub, with the usual offerings on handpump, but it also has Sambrook’s Wandle on, like so many Young’s pubs these days. And it’s not cheap at £3.25 a pint for such a relatively low ABV ale. Food is available all day, with hot main meals around £10, and sandwiches circa £4 - £5. The bar counter faces you as you enter the front door, with drinking areas extending around to the right and left, and with several nooks and crannies. Floors are bare-boarded. There are mainly normal chairs around the place, plus a couple of sofas. Wall decor seems quite tasteful, and I spotted something very unusual - a framed engraving by a convict named J Wilson, commemorating HM Queen Victoria’s escape from assassination in 1882. The garden is accessed from a door at the back on the left – this leads to some decking with three or four tables and chairs, mainly used by smokers during my visit. Some steps lead down to the main garden area, which has some unorthodox features such as the giant chess set, and the highlight apparently being an inverted stainless steel pyramid as a centrepiece. It’s a bit avant garde for my tastes, but some people must like it.
This is certainly not a bad pub; in fact it’s quite comfortable, but it’s nothing like the traditional boozer it once undoubtedly was. I might come back – after all I have been in here before, but it is a bit out of the way and isolated, by London standards.

Reputed to date from around 1700, and once the haunt of highwaymen, when the pub probably stood alone on the wild heath. It's all rather different today with a bus terminus opposite and four lanes of traffic roaring past.
The bar is ahead on entering, there are two slightly raised areas either side, a small snug with a single circular table to the left, and a seperate area/room with TV to the right. The decor and seating style changes as you move around the pub. A bit of a mix of modern/comfortable yet with other more traditional areas. There are a few board games and some books on a shelf.
There is a small outdoor terrace to the frontage, and a raised deck to the rear which then steps down to a large walled garden, shaded by trees. This area has giant chess sets, and Connect Four amongst varied seating types and a large stainless steel fountain/sculpture. There is a barbeque area here too.
Young's beers, Ordinary, Special, Wells Bombardier and Sambrook's Wandle on.
