Large venue that feels like a shadow of probable former glory. Large seating area just inside the front door with bar facing you as you walk in. Very high ceiling with three pillars in the middle of the area with a circular ledge around each and some tall metal stools to utilise the ledge (alternatively you could stand there also like me)! There is a slightly raised area with some banquettes in the left most window as you look out. The DJ pulpit occupies the area in front of the middle window. A large projector screen was pulled down to show the England SF and most of the seating was via trestle type tables and benches. The pub extends beyond the right hand side of the bar and that area has a large plasma screen at the far end. both parts have disco falls suspended from the ceiling with the size, by eye, seemingly proportional to the size of each area. The side extension had a large glass skylight but it seems to let little light in!
The four hand pumps still showing “coming soon” so I suspect Tris was something like 100% correct with his guess in his review. Quite a few keg options, Madri, Pravha, Guinness, Blue Moon, Brixton Reliance Pale Ale, Dennis Hopp’r Hepcat, Aspall cider, Staropramen, Brixton Coldharbour lager.
I certainly wouldn’t fancy a trip to the subterranean toilets after having a few. The stone steps are not well lit and vertiginous. All told an interesting venue you could say that would warrant a quick stop in passing but not one to head to unless you fancy a crawl in this central part of Brixton. It is indeed pretty gloomy in here, my iPhone screen probably doubling the illumination in my part of the pub and that was actually quite close to the door on an increasingly bright evening!

Dating from 1866 and with the name ‘Atlantic’ picked out in red to the parapet a clear indication that this was once the Atlantic Hotel, this pub is situated at the junction of Atlantic Road and Coldharbour Lane, the sound of competing boom boxes and whiff of jazz cabbage leaving the intrepid casketeer in no doubt that this is Brixton Central; a couple of shady characters, faces covered, lurked in a neighbouring side street.
Antic-fied, aside from the obligatory gold topped capitals to structural columns, there’s nothing of heritage in here. The floor is modern boarded, walls a mix of deep purple Anaglypta or grey field panelled – each panel sporting a framed print – with a bottle green ceiling. Furniture comprises some velour banquettes, then some extremely utilitarian bench seating with trestle tables. To one side is a DJ pulpit and on high, is an enormous mirror ball, the stygian gloom barely penetrated by several mixed, tiny crystal chandeliers, most illumination coming from two projector screens broadcasting foreign footie with commentary at volume, appreciated by a young studenty crowd (see photo).
With four unclipped pumps draped with a ‘Coming Soon’ sign, I doubt there was any hope of cask making a comeback, me making do with a half of Hepcat Session IPA at £3.40, served by a decent barmaid.
This isn’t really what I’d call a pub anymore, but the area’s yoof seem to like it.

Large one roomed pub with the bar to the front. No hand pumps - just keg. Nothing special.
