Liked this pub, but every time I'm in the area, note on the window says closed for maintenance will open at 4pm. Why don't they just change the opening times?

Somewhat hidden away in the Lambeth housing estates, this is a surprisingly well-presented pub (both inside and out). The brick façade isn't exactly enlivened by the austere exterior signage, and both furniture and decor within the 'U'-shaped bar is definitely on the dark side, but all is tidy enough, as is the rear beer garden (with a fresh-looking crushed stone surface). Three of four handpumps in use, offering Ghost Ship and Mosaic from Adnams plus Harvey's.

A former back street “Irish Boozer” that underwent gentrification a few years back to try and attract the affluence that was moving into the area. Fortunately though they seem to have done a fairly sympathetic job and although clearly stripped out to one internal space it still retains some traditional pub character with original wood panelling, decent furniture and lighting, and the Black Prince's coat of arms over the picture rail.
And although the food menu is above your usual standard pub grub, to try and attract the local office trade, the presence of several flat screen teles showing sport still seem to attract a friendly enough local crowd.
And this small corner pub also benefits from having a very pleasant hidden enclosed patio garden round the back which was a bit of a sun trap for our visit.
There is a bank of four handpumps on the front of the bar and these support the house ales of Harveys Sussex Best Bitter and Sharp's Doom Bar (doubled up on two pumps) and for our visit the guest was Thwaites Wainwright.
Decent enough beer in a pleasant enough surroundings. Wouldn’t hesitate to search this one out when next in the area.
