The original Crown was recorded as being on Woolwich Road but by the time of the 1901 census, it had relocated to its current position in one of the less touristy ends of Greenwich.
The first thing that is noticeable is that the exterior juts out at ground floor level creating a small balcony for the first floor. The main bar is a single knocked through room with a pool table at one end and the bar to the left hand side behind which are some patterned mirrors. A drinking shlf has been constructed between a couple of pillars to aid vertical drinkers. There is a smaller room set off to the rear containing a few old pics and dusty shelves of nick nacks, model ships and Nelson’s Trafalgar quote but on the whole, it’s all a bit on the dingy side.
Just the one ale, a surprisingly decent pint of Courage Best (£2.90) served by a very welcoming barmaid. The custonmer base wasn’t quite so charming with a constant stream of loud swearing competing from all angles which, set against a backdrop of Sinatra, was like something out of a Tarantino movie.
This isn’t the sort of place to attract anything other than a local crowd but. Despite it’s obvious down to earth approach, I didn’t feel anything particularly intimidating about the place unlike some of its nearby neighbours. If you do find yourself in this bit of town it is worth a quick oint but I would hazard a guess that mots drinkers passing here would be on their way to the nearby Pelton Arms.
