Modernised pub with an island bar in the middle of a shopping street. Some nice windows and a bit of tilework but not much else of note. On pump were API an Abbot plus a couple of Lilley's ciders. Generally innocuous and undistinguished.

This is a Greene King pub, which had on only IPA and Abbot (£1.75 a half). The usual colour illustrated pub grub menu is available - the steak & ale pie is £8.99. Meal and drink deals are available as well.

It's an Edwardian pub according to the previous reviewer, and it looks it. There's some original tiling on the dado just inside the entrance on the right; a couple of curved etced/cut glass panes in the front window that could well be original; plus a mosaic depiction of a rising sun on the floor in the right hand entranceway. There's a central island servery, with an illuminated canopy above it, glazed with turtleshell(!) and is another original feature according to the landlady. There are tall tables/tall stools in the front area, and normal tables and chairs at the back, and of course it's bare-boarded now. I actually quite liked the place as a pub, but with a choice of just GK IPA and Abbot real ales, it doesn't win any prices for ale choice.

Roger Button left this review about Rising Sun

The current Rising Sun was built in 1904 and can be found at the end of the shopping area on the High Street. This pub replaced an earlier pub called the Old Rising Sun pub that stood just round the corner on the site of what is now the library.

The pub has undergone much alteration and a quite recent refurbishment but does still retain a degree of its original character with several original features still intact including the mosaic flooring in the entrance lobbies, some fine tiling just inside the right hand entrance and some remnants of etched windows bearing the original saloon bar name.

The twin bay frontage contains 3 doors, the centre of which is now sealed and possibly an old bottle & jug entrance. Internally it has been knocked into one with a central traditional island bar containing some coloured glzing around the canopy. A couple of open fireplaces look like they are still usuable. Some modern pictures of the area’s more interesting buildings adorn the walls.

There is sadly just the one hand pump (there used to be more) dispensing Old Golden Hen on my latest visit which at £3.05 was reasonable value for the area and quality was decent enough. The food is very good value with main courses between £4-£8 plus various daily club deals and the food was proving quite popular during my lunchtime visit.

From my experiences the customer base has always been from the more intelligent end of the local gene pool making the pub one of the better options in the area.
