Dating from 1852, this was originally the Lord Burleigh.
It’s very small inside, with a raised area to the rear. The floor is boarded, furniture being mixed and tall, some tables are extra tall, which isn’t amusing. The bar area is modern, with the bar’s lip lit from underneath; it looks like something from a cocktail bar in what appears to be a shop conversion, with bare wood wainscotting with white walls and ceiling, studded with small downlighters, the whole effect being overly bright. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with the sound off was playing on the TV, so as not to interfere with the muzak. There’s little décor, aside from the life-sized black wooden sculpture of a gorilla. Customers seemed local, with the raised area occupied by fizzed-up squealers.
There were two pumps, one dispensing Doom, the other with a Landlord clip, but rather than unused or clip reversed, it was crisscrossed with black electrical tape for some weird reason, so I ended up with a half of Sharp’s Atlantic at £3.00.
This really is a poor place, even by the poor standards of Victoria, which the pub claims is a two-minute walk away.

Weak Real Ale in a pleasantly turned out pub meant I had to resort to cider. Get some decent ale in to warrant a revisit.

It's improved a bit since John's and Rex's latest reviews, below, and is now a pleasant town pub, mainly used by commuters so lacking in conviviality, but at least the beer's better. Two ales on, Doombar and Landlord, both in good condition, and a pump reserved for a real cider, which sadly had a sign on saying ‘Symonds Cider Coming Soon'. There was a flat screen showing live sports, the staff were pleasant, and while there was no proper cooked food available, they did offer plates of nibbles. Worth including in a crawl.
