Just the two ales on in here - Doom Bar (£4.50 a pint) and Darkstar American Pale Ale (£4.90 a pint - ouch!). There were numerous keg offerings as well, of the type that some might regard as "craft" beer. A chalkboard helpfully listed all the beers available, including ABV and prices. Clearly they do food, as a couple of people were working in the kitchen area, but I must have been in too early to see a menu. Another chalkboard mentioned bar snacks, such as crisps (£1.40) and various nuts at around £2.20 or so.

This is now a single-room bar, furnished with banquettes and normal tables and chairs, is bare boarded of course, and although a sort of alcove at the back on the left contains an armchair, there are thankfully no tall tables/tall stools in here. There are also no TVs or fruit machines, but some pop music radio station was playing, presumably for the benefit of the staff as I was the only customer in there at midday on Wednesday. There's all kinds of stuff on the walls, mainly arty photos and prints, but also even more chalkboards advertising wines, Champagnes and the like. Some fairy lights are strung across the ceiling for some reason - but not switched on at lunchtime of course. There's a fenced in area at the front providing a bit of outside seating.

Even though I didn't see their menu it's certainly a gastropub. As well as their website saying as much, the signs are there - glass and wine rack in place of a bar back, open to view kitchen, and large jars of nuts, but no sprigs of flowers on the tables. Perhaps I was in too early for them as well. At those beer prices I would say that it's just about OK for a swift one my APA was in fine form), but not somewhere that I would choose to spend any length of time.

I've passed this pub many a time and thought that I'd finally give it a try. Situated in Royal Oak, in an area around which it's not advisable to wander at later hours, this pub backs on to the railway lines for Paddington and the underground.

Inside, the walls are covered with pictures, some of old famous film stars and chairs are French café style. It all rather reminds me of a 1980s' wine bar or American-style burger restaurant; in short, rather dated. Tables are crammed in to the point where you can barely see the floor or access the bar. The bar is metal topped and rather high, which deters bar hogs. I opted for a Dark Star Pale Ale (£4.20), the other draught option was the ubiquitous Doom Bar; my pint arrived in a plastic 'glass', which didn't really appeal.

Notwithstanding the fact that the place was rammed, the loudish music and deafening noise of conversation left me with no choice other than to sit on the patio where I enjoyed harassment from one of the passing locals.

This place really isn't for me and seems to appeal to the under 30s so I won't be returning.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Westbourne

Compact gastro-pub, with lots of furniture crammed in. Mixed decor. Small lounge to rear, but a fair amount of patio furniture out front. Slightly incongruous sports TVs on the walls. Two handpumps on the bar, with regular Doom Bar and guest Brighton Bier English Garden (£3.90) available.
