Dating from 1778, this pub was rebuilt in 1899, the current name the result of a sensitive refurbishment from March 2023.
The pub is – or was – famous for its incredible six-tiered floral display, which hopefully will return. The interior isn’t that big, me not being able to recall it as I’ve not set foot in here for a good 23 years. Aside from what may be some residual etched glass, the style now is modern dark boarding, smoky grey paint, some new dark wood panelling, cream ceiling, picture lights illuminating random prints, then textured clear spherical lanterns over a bar of modern wooden design; one minor item of note, is the fireplace with its polychromatic floral tiled surround. Thereafter, furniture is modern traditional, with some dark banquettes, punctuated with white cable knit scatter cushions (see photo). Customers were moderate in number, all seemingly youngish professional types.
A half Camden Hells from a limited keg selection, costing £3.10, an almost charitable act given the area, then a half of Landlord coming in at a pricey £2.80 and good.
This is quite a good makeover compared to some of the acts of vandalism witnessed and is a far better bet than the nearby Greene King or Albany.
